Delhi, April 26, 2022: As India celebrates its rich history of people, culture and achievements on the occasion of 75 years of independence, Netflix and The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, have come together to honor unique real-life stories of extraordinary individuals through a series of inspiring short videos titled Azadi Ki Amrit Kahaniyan. This was launched today in the presence of Shri Anurag Thakur, Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Govt. of India.

Bela Bajaria, Global Head of TV, Netflix, who was also present at the event, said, “Great stories can come from anywhere and are ever so inspiring when they are about people who rise against the odds. In partnership with The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Azadi Ki Amrit Kahaniyan focuses on celebrating remarkable individuals and their stories that can inspire people in India and around the world.”

Narrated by acclaimed actress Neena Gupta, these short videos capture the remarkable journey of these individuals and how they broke the glass ceiling in their respective fields, ranging from science to sports. Here is what these achievers had to say about what Azadi (freedom) means to them personally.

“If something hasn’t been attempted, it doesn’t mean you cannot do it. To me, Azadi means facing a raging fire.” — Harshini Kanheker, India’s first female firefighter.

“From water comes life, and water is life. I flow free like a river, and will continue to protect and serve water, that’s Azadi to me.” — Basanti Devi, Environmentalist and protector of the Kosi river ecosystem.

“If women hold the power to create life, women also hold the power to save lives. If I have to put my life at stake to save other lives, I wouldn’t think twice.”  — Poonam Nautiyal walked miles across the Bageshwar district in Uttarakhand to vaccinate thousands of people living in remote areas.

“Being a scientist, every moment is a learning curve. We need to face challenges, and we need to learn. I always say that science has no gender, and Azadi is when we take our nation to new horizons.” — Tessy Thomas, the “Missile Woman of India”, is the first-ever woman scientist to head a missile project in India.

“I am a force of nature, I can scale great heights, and my journey has just begun. Azadi means to make your way up in the world.” — Anshu Jamsenpa, the first woman in the world to summit Mount Everest twice in 5 days.

“When you dream something out of the box, it’s very important to push the norms. Azadi is to be one with the wind.” — Aarohi Pandit, the world’s youngest person and first woman pilot to cross the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean solo in a light-sport aircraft.

“You have the right to dream, and the right to achieve your dream. Just like the waves, be patient, be consistent, and never look back. To me, Azadi is to take a bit of the ocean wherever I go.”— Tanvi Jagadish, India’s first competitive woman stand-up paddleboarder.

The videos are now available on the Ministry’s social media platforms and Doordarshan.

World Earth Day is here and with the talk of climate change, depleting ozone layer and the planet being at the center of harmful human activities, it is a must that we not let this topic slip by and do our best. A small contribution by each one of us can go a long way and when we all join our hands, it just gets easier. If you are looking for ideas on what to do, here is something that can help. QuackQuack, India’s leading dating app asked its user base what are their plans for World Earth day and here is the response they came up with :

  1. Planting trees: While it is not an immediate respite to climate change, planting trees is an investment for the future of our society, city and earth. In the survey conducted, 30% of male and female users in the age group of 30-40 said that they are looking forward to doing their small part in battling against climate change this year.  Whether it is planting more plants in their house, the society garden or in the city, our netizens are ready to be of help.
  2. Putting the science learnt in school to good use: It was not long back when we learnt about the energy and water conservation techniques, we can employ in our day to day lives. Fortunately, it is never too late to employ them. Human inventions such as rainwater harvesting and solar cookers are some of the cost effective techniques to be ecological at the same time as being easy on the pocket. With the water conserved from rain, you can use it later for plants and solar cookers saves money on gas and electricity! Keeping that in mind, 45% of youngsters in the age bracket of 28-35 look forward to using at least one of these inventions in their household.
  3. Saying ‘no’ to chemicals: Almost every day we see the news filled with stories of birth defects or some or the other disease due to use of fertilizers and pesticides in crops and the soil damage because of their excessive use. Recently, there are many campaigns too which talk about maintaining the balance of water table, planting trees and not depleting the soil of its nutrients any further. So the QuackQuack user base is not far behind. 48% of people in the age group of 25-35 have pledged to enlighten their family and neighbors on the use of chemicals in our day-to-day life.
  4. Recycling: Without fail, you have a pile of plastic bags locked in a corner of your house somewhere. It is time to not let that pile get any bigger. If ever you go outside for shopping, carry your own cloth bag with you. If a shopkeeper offers you a product in a plastic bag, ask for an alternative. 50% of QuackQuack user base in the age group of 20-25 say that they are going to minimize their consumption of plastic by refusing to buy it. In addition to that, they are going to reuse the plastic already at home by coming up with DIY activities of decorating the house.
  5. Letting the car rest: Although it is easy to fall into the habit of grabbing your car keys to go anywhere, we are not only harming our health, but also the environment with this habit. Sitting in one place and position for a long duration is not only bad for your digestive system, back and also overall health but driving to short distances is also not good for the environment. Develop the habit of walking and if not, then cycling.  Both these activities will not only keep you fit but also contribute so much to the environment with the reduced CO2 emissions.
  6. Adopting more vegetarian options: Given the Indian diet and cuisine, the options of vegetarian food are endless. You would be happy to know that while eating vegetarian food, you are also saving the planet! The consumption of meat is not very healthy and imagine all the diseases it brings with it! So 10% of male and female users in the age group of 25-40 from tier-2 cities have decided to dump their meat eating habits from this World Earth Day forward.

On this World Health Day, I would like to put a glimpse on a word that is- Posture.
In this era full of technology people are spending hours sitting on a chair working in front of screen which is unknowingly putting excess pressure towards the spine which ultimately leads to poor posture that results in severe health hazards.
So here are a few tips for all of my friends who work for hours sitting at one place.
1. Keep moving yourself on between work to avoid continuous pressure on the spine.
2. Mild stretching of neck and back during the break time.
3. If possible cushion your seat well to avoid that excess pressure.
4. Keep yourself well hydrated.
Even the kids went through a tough time past 2 years,
so here are a few tips for our future generation’s general health:
1. Practice meditation for 5 mins daily with your kid to relieve the stress from their body and mind.
2. Take a walk in the park with your kids (bare foot) and ask them to look at the green grass which will soothe their eyes.
3. Give them diet rich in calcium for healthy bones and spine.
4. Most important maintain proper hydration through out the day.
5. Reduce their screen time and check their posture while they watch.

To break out of the monotony of life it is essential to look out for inspiration around us and embrace it gracefully. In the midst of uncertainty, to trace the roots of our true inspiration, we traveled across the valley of flowers and discovered rarity in the petals of a flower. Each pastel petal tangled like sweet poetry with the stem. Our collection is a whiff of freshness in the air and it takes you on a journey of visualizing magnified geometry in florals.

The collection is a conglomeration of various summer shades including buff beige, lilacs, twilight blue, and transitioning ombre. Whereas the contemporary essence of the label can be seen dressed in lehengas ornamented with Katana work and glass bead decoration. Ruffles of structure and nudity took the center stage with evening fits including gorgeous capes, indo-western co-ord sets and more. As for Menswear, crisp Sherwanis and Bandhgala sets bring in a festive masculine touch to feisty florals. Conjoining lines, dispersing forms and the prettiest of florals is our mood for this season.

Derived from French, the word ‘recherche’ signifies ‘Rare Exquisiteness’. The beauty of nature always remains to be something so rare and undiscovered, that we couldn’t comprehend the beauty just by looking at it. We had to immerse and bring it alive through drapery and craftsmanship. Be a part of our journey and feel the synergy of collective beauty, of what brings exquisiteness to our lives.

As Much as we love playing Holi, we are also scared of damaging our skin due to chemicals used in colours. It’s always good to avoid these chemical colours which are not safe for kids too. They could cause allergy and rashes. Here’s how you can make your own chemical free Holi colors at home and enjoy this festival with no tensions.

To begin with, you need to choose the base for the color. It could be besan, maida or corn flour. First experiment with one colour, once you are sure it’s coming out the way you want make rest of the colours.

Yellow

Add turmeric powder to besan, and mix it nicely, till they are mixed together well. The ratio of turmeric powder to besan is 20:80. After this, sieve it using a very fine strainer.

Red

Spread out the turmeric powder and squeeze lime juice on it. The acidic lemon will react with turmeric and turn it red in colour. Spread it out to dry in a well-ventilated room but away from the sun, which can bleach it. Once it is dry, rub it again between the palms of your hands and sieve it a few times.

Pink

Follow the same process as in the case of making red, only use lesser quantity of lemon.

Green

Add mehendi to maida (equal ratio), mix and sieve a few times to get green colour. You can also use edible food colours but make sure the brand makes them naturally.

Brown

Boil 200 gm of coffee powder in water till it turns brown. Once it cools down mix it with corn flour (1.5 kg) with your hands and leave it to dry for a day. Then, sieve it. You can add rose water for nice fragrance.

Grey

This colour can be made using amla (Indian gooseberry). Take out the seeds and grind it in the mixer grinder. Add the juice to corn flour. Allow it to dry and sieve it a few times.

Happy Holi!!!

Please share your journey how it started from tech person to storyteller to an entrepreneur

I began my career with Mu Sigma, a technology company, and got the opportunity to work with Fortune 500 companies in the USA.  I am an avid reader and hence being a storyteller comes naturally to me. I wrote two books, the first one ‘Y.O.U’  was announced as a best-seller by The New Indian Express & the Oxford bookstores, and the second book was titled ‘How I was forced to become a staunch RACIST’. When I decided to pursue entrepreneurship, I decided to stick to the media space where I authored 70 original scripts. I exited after 3 years when my company was acquired by a Bombay-based production house. My experience with my first start-up gave me the insight that even large corporations make marketing decisions based on how they feel about the content instead of using data to get the best results. Here is where I stepped in with Instoried to help marketers/ content creators or just about anyone to create content that is more empathetic and thereby more likely to convert. Humans are emotionally driven and it is important to communicate with empathy be it in business or in personal relationships. Instoried has been on the forefront of the empathetic revolution for content.

What are the biggest hurdles that you faced in your journey?

My biggest challenge was getting the team in place and ensuring that there are always enough funds to spend for the same. After my savings were exhausted, I had to break my PPF account, despite my parent’s disapproval. Subsequently, I mortgaged my jewelry and used the money to pay salaries. Once the team was set, I was confident of our journey being positive even if it would have a few hurdles in between. I am very happy to share that we now have an outstanding team, 60% of which are women.

Failures are the best teachers so how did you overcome that?

I strongly believe that a failure only happens if you conclude it as a failure. If you are persistent, innovative, and agile you can always convert a failure into an opportunity. In my own case, because I knew that a fund shortage is only a temporary setback if you allow yourself room to innovate and grow, I persisted and invested my own personal savings to grow. You don’t fail if you persist and are quick enough to make changes to the way you do things.

Your opinion on the current situation of OTT platforms or the scope for young writers

OTT platforms provide lucrative prospects to budding content creators. Demand for OTT content based on geo-demographics is on the rise, both within India and internationally. I think the year 2022 is definitely going to be an exciting year for OTT players as the content pipeline will be stronger than ever.

Share 3 advice for young entrepreneurs and storytellers

  1. Persevere and don’t stop!
  2. Team is everything. Running a start-up is not a one man show!
  3. Money, name and success are all transient. The only one that prevails is the relationship with humans. So be grounded, humble and empathetic in life.
