Parents and Teachers together find a path for the child, and they walk hand in hand with him to find the stone of capabilities.

Online examinations are easy to clear, you can score well in them; this is the most common sentence we say to students. But we forget the pressure of online classes they are going through. They have to deal with the screen all day. And sometimes they are not even able to clear their doubts. Even before online classes, they used to go through a lot of stress and tension of scoring in their exams and doing better. Rather than understanding their mental state we focus on the competition and pressurize them to do better than everyone, especially in finals. Not just about studies, we give them stress about their future which is way far like their college and their jobs.

Parents usually play a significant role in the character and personality building of their children. Their child should be comfortable sharing his fears, stress, and weaknesses with them without any hesitation. But some parents expect more from their children, which unintentionally creates a burden on their shoulders. In a study of 190 students from grades 11 and 12 in Kolkata by researchgate.in , two-thirds of students stated that they experience academic stress and pressure from their parents for better performance. They start keeping secrets and take unbearable pressure which usually leads to low scores. Parents should make their child understand the tough competition and suggest ways to deal with it with his speed. The child should be assured that running slow does not make him a loser. He can catch the speed one day by practicing and it is okay to be like this.

Teachers are the ones to show us the way and teach us the method to walk on that way. The teaching profession is one of the most crucial professions in the industry. Teachers should be patient with the student. Any harsh move can not only affect his student’s scores but also their mental health. He should make them aware that there is a world of knowledge beyond books which can be acquired only by experience. Failures should be normalized by them, but the motivation to achieve goals should be constant. As Bill Gates said, “Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is the most important.”

In situations, parents and teachers should walk hand in hand to help their child in choosing the correct path and walking over it. Career counseling by both of them can show major changes in a child’s mental development. They can coordinate together to free him from burden and study at ease, as parents are well aware of their child’s traits and interests, and teachers know their capabilities.

They should be taught out of the book, about the society and complications they will face in the real world. Alone books cannot build their career but their mindset and determination play an equally important role.

We got a chance to interact with young CEO, Devangana Mishra and found out what made her choose the path to be with autism kids and learn great things from them. Let’s read more about her journey.

1. Please Introduce yourself to our readers.

I am Devangana Mishra, the Founder, and CEO of Brain Bristle. I come from a highly gifted & creative family. With the freedom and genes to do anything, I chose autism, giftedness, and mental health as a career path to see where I could take along kids diagnosed autistically.

  1. What inspired you to choose this industry?

I was terribly shy in my childhood, but a writer to express my world. Then I met very active kids with autism, they were the complete opposites of me- we made a good blend. I met my first grown-up with autism when I was 19 and the complete disregard for his giftedness led me to Columbia University, NY to study autism in detail and depth. This is how my journey with the autism spectrum began.

  1. What kind of problems did you face at the initial time with this venture?

We live in a male-dominated society, where the need to compete is more important than respecting human beings along their path. The only way we can let our kids with autism turn into disruptors and creators is if we let our kids take their time, teach them to figure their way in the world rather than rush them, slow them down or crush them. This simple message of listening, following, facilitating has been my biggest loss.

  1. How did you overcome those?

I now quietly follow my own path, my lived experience of working with these kids, I try to listen to other perspectives in the space and keep formulating into my own humanistic style. I follow my own understanding and intuitive style then let an autistic brain mold itself rather than me molding it, in and out.

  1. Thoughts on Focus and flow in a distracted world, what our kids with autism can teach us about the science of mindfulness.

Our world is loud, distracting, and everything is in flux, this overstimulates a child with autism, disturbing their flow. To be a silent observer of this, teaching a child worldly way then letting him/ her take his time is how we can listen to autism. Their behaviors are a sign we are either moving too fast or too slow, leading to depression, frustration, or outbursts. The concept of mindfulness arose because the world got so busy, people needed to make it a priority. Our kids with autism are born to be lost in their world- pulling them out is when they’re present and alert. To keep this balance of presence and absence is how we can learn focus and flow.
