Healthy eating today has various layers and opinions to it. Tani Naturals aims to bring age-old food traditions to the contemporary world from their range of products that are truly healthy, organic, and vegan. The products are manufactured in their farm on the outskirts of Bengaluru. Here, they rely on local farmers and natural farming methods to source their ingredients and in turn help boost the rural economy by employing youth and women from these communities.

Who Are They?

The founders are a mother-daughter duo on a mission to make traditional practices accessible within modern living. Thanuja, a 50- year old Yogi with a personal passion for Biohacking to enhance her own mental and physical well-being and optimize the quality of life is supported by her daughter Prarthana. She is living her entrepreneurial dreams through her mother whilst working as a business analyst in Australia.

Thanuja often found herself exploring the traditional and natural way of life and the prevalent theme was always a heartful connection to the way our ancestors nurtured the earth, nourished their bodies, and developed their divine selves to be a part of the communal society.

“As a mother, I understand the significance of honesty, truth and doing the right thing. I carry these values into our business with each decision made with integrity by following a holistic path to wellness by having you and your family in mind”, says Thanuja.

Problem Statement

As she began to evolve in her wellness journey, she discovered that most of the most of the ‘healthy’ products available on the shelves these days are riddled with chemicals, preservatives, and sugars to lower the prices. 72% of the oils consumed by Indians were imported from other countries, one of the main ones being Palm Oils.

She also noticed that farmers were shifting away from cultivating oil-extracting seeds and other fresh produce as most of the products were imported from other countries. This led to farmers losing their share to industrialization and mediator traders, which affected the rural economy.

What Else?

Tani Naturals prides itself on being healthy as well as easy on the planet. They produce their range of products in small batches by managing waste, which helps them to be sustainable with minimal carbon footprint. They only use ingredients that are 100% ecofriendly and their containers, labels and packaging materials are biodegradable. Their promise is to achieve 100% sustainability in the coming years by following a “Zero Hazard “approach in the production line.

The Journey Of Tani Naturals Oils

  • Handpicked ingredients

The finest 100% natural raw materials are sustainably sourced from farmers across South India to ensure the wellbeing of consumers.

  • Sun dried

Their raw ingredients are thoroughly cleaned, and sun dried to retain its natural essence and aroma at their farm located in an area which is free from pollution.

  • Cold pressed

Their oils are traditionally extracted with a natural slow process where the raw ingredients are crushed, and wood pressed without using heat or additives to retain the natural flavour, aroma, and healthy nutrition value of the seeds.

  • Manually Filtered

The extracted oil is left to settle in Tin cans for about 3 days after which it is filtered using a cotton fabric to remove any sediments. Additional chemicals are not needed for any enhancements as the extraction process is slow.

Hence, Tani Naturals exists to manifest the positive holistic shift we desire to see in the natural wellness movement and share our experiences and passion for ancestral knowledge and REAL food with our modern community.

Exemplary leadership skills, adaptability, and multitasking ability are the unique qualities of women entrepreneurs, who are now making a mark in every industry across the world. Having unique traits like gauging opportunities and taking risks when needed, women are creating a huge impact in both the profit and non-profit sectors across the globe.

With many enterprises and ventures being led by talented women, the startup ecosystem in India is booming. Nearly 4 out of 5 women in India desire to be entrepreneurs. But, on account of varied economic factors like gender bias, no investor confidence, and the non-availability of role models; many women are not fulfilling their start-up dream, despite being passionate about the same. How can this situation be improved? What is the role of existing successful women entrepreneurs in nurturing new talent? Do they lend them a helping hand?

Here are some unique ways through which successful business owners support other women to succeed:

1-on-1 Mentorship

Many accomplished business women are known to guide and advise young business owners in their respective domains. This is achieved either through collaborations, sponsoring or by acting as advisors within their capacity. Networks like Score in the USA and Kool Kanya or Her in India offer spaces for dialogue between the Veteran ladies and the newcomers to the field of entrepreneurship. And this dialogue can later lead to mentorship or training as the case may be.

Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, for instance, runs Biocon Academy to train young achievers in the field of Biotechnology. Through the YouTube channel of the academy, she hosts live sessions and answers any question posed by women who want to lead.

Such mentorship helps new business women to navigate various obstacles like gaining funding, understanding the market, developing leadership skills, acquiring the trust of investors, and other nuances of running a successful business.

Lending a helping hand takes different forms. Even an employer can act as a mentor to the employee, liberating the employee to take up leadership roles. And in this sphere, we need to recognize organizations that have an all-women staff. For example, in the startup sphere, there are organizations like My Style Communications, which try to encourage women from diverse backgrounds, with a passion for writing to join their organization.

Sharing Their Entrepreneurial Journey in Online and Offline Spaces

Prominent entrepreneurs of India such as Indira Nooyi – the former CEO of PepsiCo, Supriya Paul  – Co-founder of Josh Talks, Jagi Manat Panda – Co-founder of Orel Communication, and others are known to have shared their stories in forums like Ted Talks, Social Media and books. Such stories prove to be very beneficial in inspiring young women of India to dawn on leadership roles. Many youngsters get influenced to become entrepreneurs at a very young age by either reading autobiographies or documentaries on prominent women business leaders.

Start-up incubation:

Successful business women not only mentor but also give back to the community by functioning as angel investors or venture capitalists. They also run entrepreneurial coaching programs, and the best-performing candidates are given grants to help them scale and achieve success.

Creation of Communities to facilitate a women-driven start-up ecosystem

Communities spearheaded by enterprising businesswomen act as another platform that fosters the growth of upcoming women entrepreneurs. There are many communities that are designed especially for women who are restarting their careers. Platforms like Meetups and LinkedIn can be leveraged to facilitate open dialogue and discussions between varied business women in different domains. Live chats, and guest speaker sessions at organizations and colleges by veteran business women help foster a strong community and knowledge-sharing space for those passionate to learn about being a business owner.

Internship Opportunity

Young women entrepreneurs, who want to grow in their field can benefit extensively if they intern with the veterans in the field. Internships are surefire ways of learning the tricks of the trade. By shadowing successful businesswomen, upcoming lady entrepreneurs can learn a lot.

Future of Indian Women in The Business Space

The future of business women in India is promising with a lot of prospects for the younger generation. Women are achieving milestones in varied fields like technology, STEM, finance, social impact, and others. Mentoring, gaining training or funding are a few of the key aspects through which young women who nurture a dream to succeed as an entrepreneur can benefit from the wisdom of experienced women in the domain.

Not only the profit sector but also the nonprofit sector has women taking up leadership roles. Working for impact is a rewarding field that many young women might aspire to be a part of. Also, there are many social entrepreneurs who offer the space to have open discussions on varied aspects which is a starting point for future mentorship and collaboration.

Since the role of women in every sector is important, their education is equally important. As they say, educate a woman and you educate a family; if you educate a woman entrepreneur the entire community will benefit.

There is no denying that the evolution of the human species was because of equal contributions from men and women individually. Women have always played a key role in helping in the changing world scenario; however, their function, most often than not, has always been as behind the screen as a, support system.

However, a woman’s excellence, most often than not, never left the four walls. In fact, women were hardly ever a part of any significant scenarios during the first, second, or third industrial global industrial revolution. Hence the growing gender discrepancy in the working environment of the 21st century. Research has shown that women are often much more organized, skilled, and intelligent than men in many leadership scenarios. Yet, only 7.5 percent of the Fortune 500 workforce includes women as CEO.

The role of women in the booming digital industry

The digital transition has opened an expansive new gate for women entrepreneurs worldwide with more unique opportunities and scopes to grow and thrive as individuals. With over 60 percent digitization by this year’s end, the world is moving towards a new era. While the world is still under the realms of traditional industrial growth, the dependency on the ‘internet’ has opened a new channel for women to showcase their potential.

  • Remote Multitasking

Tools like Team, Zoom, etc., have made it very easy and flexible for women to work remotely from anywhere in the world without requiring a strict and time-bound presence physically at any workspace. This has given an enormous scope to many women to return to work and yet manage most of their personal and professional situations easily.

The result – More creativity and choices with women-centric presentations and ideologies being implemented. The dynamics and role reversal are also visible.

  • Financial alterations

Fundraising is not an easy task as it requires endless hours of pitching, investor hunting, and much more. With virtual communications becoming a new norm, it is easier to reach broader and longer distances for seeking financial assistance. Skype, hangout, etc., have made it feasible to connect with investors beyond borders and seek help within days of communications.

  • Availability of digital tools

The availability of newer and more sophisticated digital tools has opened numerous more unique scopes for women to try. Education, finance, trading, and many aspects of informative science are now easier and more flexible to handle, thanks to the right tools and accessories. From modular capsules to flexibility of timing and program management, there is a look that is now easier to manage, thanks to the right digital tool.

  • Ease of promotion

Today promotion is no more reliant on print media or televisions. Social media has become a solid and integral necessity for every promotion. However, instead of seeking third-party assistance, these platforms allow the freedom of self-publicity through any desired channel. Self-promotion is one of the most cost-effective and genuine methods to connect with organic consumers. Women can utilize this aspect to its full potential to help drive their sales and publicity.

  • Innovative entrepreneurship

Women are one of the most significant untapped entrepreneurial scopes worldwide today. With the incorporation of women in the digital business sector, innovation is bound to take a far more neutral stance than before. Newer approaches delving into women-related scenarios will be a fundamental change that many will be looking forward to.

A future of entrepreneurship with gender neutrality

Men went ahead to earn livelihood and manage the world outside while women stayed back and managed the home. For generations, their excellent managerial skills and keen accounting knowledge have been the critical reasons for families’ smooth sailing personal lives and the overall growth of the family’s children. Today the world is changing, and women are leading the race by standing on the mantel to show rather than the guide from the sideline. With more innovative startups being introduced that are trying to minimize the gender discrepancy, hopes for a strong entrepreneurial future for women seems like to be very near. Mystyle Communications based out of Bengaluru, India is one such digital workspace which is setting up new milestones with its unique women-centric workspace. From missed opportunities to grabbing the chance to shine, this is the future character trait of women in the world of business.

“What defines you is not what you achieve but the road that you take to survive and thrive through the ordeal to reach your goal” is the inspiring words of a successful woman who made it to the top of the economic pyramid through her zeal to be the best, Sheryl Sandberg.

India is a country of brimming potential, with advancements occurring in every industry. In 75 yrs of its independence, India has conquered the skies and left its mark everywhere. The journey so far would not have been possible without the constant participation and zeal of the feminine brigade.

Impact of Women Entrepreneurs on India’s Economy

The change in the growth scenario of the country can be dedicated equally to women who have proven themselves to be excellent leaders, managers, and successful entrepreneurs. From the Amul Co-operative movement where women played a key role in transforming India from a milk deficit to a milk-surplus country to Lijjat Papad where seven women built an empire on India’s most loved snack; women-centric business models have never failed to create buzzworthy impact.

They not only paved the way for female entrepreneurs but their contribution towards boosting the economy of the nation is also equally impressive.

Reforms in Guardianship and Custody Laws in India in May 2015 was one of the most iconic moments in giving women the well-deserved identity they had built for themselves. According to the law, the father’s or the husband’s signature and name in educational documents and government id was no more a mandate.

Making room to establish their identities for their contribution and hard work, the new law motivated many women to come out of their bindings and start building on their ideas, transforming them into realities.

The Chains Holding Women Back

While social stigmas like women are meant to run the households and not earn for whatever reason still surrounds our society, what leaves us thinking is how our habitual repetition of turning a blind eye to things that may not concern us directly, but at-large. Women themselves are often the shackle holding themselves back, and the norms and guidelines of unconscious gender bias can never change if we do not.

While this is a grave concern in itself, the other chains and shackles include..

  • Lack of knowledge and understanding of the business administration can help them excel in developing the plan and the network.
  • Absence of financial assistance to help them establish their business idea due to a lack of information about loans, schemes and incentives. The issue of collateral for loans also has been a massive detriment to the process.
  • A deficit of resources due to the unavailability of training and experienced mentors often stops many from progressing further with their dreams.
  • Unawareness of the market – The market is constantly changing, and the middlemen are often too late or unaware of the turning wheels. The result is a continued loss of hard work and time.

Factors Driving Women to Start Businesses Today

Despite all the barriers and shackles, there is no doubt the 21st century is the era of women standing up for themselves and creating a niche identity. In the last decade alone, thousands of women have changed the world’s outlook by forcing them to recognise the brilliant gender they are. The driving factors include :

  • The need for recognition from the world around.
  • The ability to be the support system to the family.
  • The zeal to make a difference for the ones who are lost.
  • The ambition to showcase the skills that’s different and has potential to be a breakthrough.
  • The drive to be an equal in a hierarchy, gender bias, and class differentiation.

Few Lesser-known Tales of Women’s Entrepreneurship in India

Some of the most inspiring tales of the rise of the women from unknown parts of the country are worth being told about, not because they are successful but because they are the inspiration for others.

  • Anita Devi

The mushroom lady of Bihar helped hundreds of villages across Nalanda to become independent by successfully growing and harvesting mushrooms.

  • Ananya and Anushree Malloo

A market dominated by big brand names, men hygiene care is not an easy venture to work on. Yet, a young female duo’s startup Nuutjob showed that even women can create a premium line-up of intimate products for men without worrying about backlash or prejudice.

  • Chetna Gala Simha

The inspiring activist who created the Mahila Seva Sahakari Bank, the first-ever bank for rural women exclusively has been able to overturn decades of preconceptions by providing over 50 million dollars of financial support to rural women entrepreneurs.

  • Prema Gopalan

Post the heartbreaking trauma of the 1993 earthquake, one lady took it upon herself to help rebuild the villages through help from the local women. This was the beginning of a new change that laid the foundation of Swayam Shikshan Prayog, a community venture that helped women grow through skill training and learning.

Government Initiatives to Promote Women Entrepreneurship in India

  • Bharatiya Mahila Bank Business Loan

The scheme provides loans of over Rs. 20 crores for women entrepreneurs. As a collateral-free loan can also be availed of for loans worth less than Rs. 1 crore.

  • Udyogini Scheme

For women with an annual income of Rs. 1.5 lakh  to Rs. 3 lakh for women wanting to start a business but have no capital.

  • Dena Shakti Scheme

It was designed for women entrepreneurs looking to start their business in certain sectors such as agriculture, retail and manufacturing. The interest rate  is 0.25% below the base rate for upto  Rs. 20 lakhs.

  • Women Entrepreneurship Platform

Started by NITI Aayog to motivate women to start their own businesses.

A New Beginning of Hope

Changes can be witnessed in every sphere, no matter how big or small in magnitude.  Women-based startups and networking platforms support entrepreneurship by giving women the platform to identify their potential and work from anywhere. This new ideology of all women’s workspaces and organizations is paving the way for many hidden talents and aspiring ladies to come forward and pursue their passion without much hesitation.

With hopes for many more such unique propositions in the future, we look forward to witnessing many more women-led business empires to rule the world.

“Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or lose. I think that the power is the principle. So let’s get powerful by getting our power back.” – ANJU K

Sharing stories of victories and defeats with others is important to heal. The healing that happens when you’re heard and validated is remarkable.

Healing 2 Peace is the journey of different brave souls from suffering to surviving their pain. It is not just mine or my kids journey, anyone can join us. It doesn’t matter what they survived, it only matters that they did.

One time I was listening to Oprah Winfrey, she said –

” If they don’t offer you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair with you next time.”

I was deeply touched by this line and I created my own platform. This is not just mine, who ever was never heard or validated, I am here for you, to hear you, to support you.

Our mission is to promote the self-reliance and empowerment. We educate and empower others about the abuse we suffered, how we survived and what resources we found helpful for us to over come our suffering.

Our aim is to provide a platform for victims/survivors, to tell them about available resources and other coping skills. We will tailor this platform to meet the special needs of other brave souls who are overcoming hardship.

After devastating events, getting back to normal is hard. For some of us, financial insecurity becomes a major obstacle. Yes, there are many resources available to help us but when we are in the healing process, it is overwhelming to ask for help. It feels like we are asking for too much. So when we are in therapy, using our pain, creativity and skills, we create awesome and amazing things.

Join us, maybe you will also find your passion.

It is a wrenching feeling going from being self- sufficient to need money (from others) for every little thing.

Come and join me in our healing journey…

You can reach out to me anytime through the email at www.healing2peace.com or Instagram @anju29peace or @healing2peace

Please share your journey how it started from tech person to storyteller to an entrepreneur

I began my career with Mu Sigma, a technology company, and got the opportunity to work with Fortune 500 companies in the USA.  I am an avid reader and hence being a storyteller comes naturally to me. I wrote two books, the first one ‘Y.O.U’  was announced as a best-seller by The New Indian Express & the Oxford bookstores, and the second book was titled ‘How I was forced to become a staunch RACIST’. When I decided to pursue entrepreneurship, I decided to stick to the media space where I authored 70 original scripts. I exited after 3 years when my company was acquired by a Bombay-based production house. My experience with my first start-up gave me the insight that even large corporations make marketing decisions based on how they feel about the content instead of using data to get the best results. Here is where I stepped in with Instoried to help marketers/ content creators or just about anyone to create content that is more empathetic and thereby more likely to convert. Humans are emotionally driven and it is important to communicate with empathy be it in business or in personal relationships. Instoried has been on the forefront of the empathetic revolution for content.

What are the biggest hurdles that you faced in your journey?

My biggest challenge was getting the team in place and ensuring that there are always enough funds to spend for the same. After my savings were exhausted, I had to break my PPF account, despite my parent’s disapproval. Subsequently, I mortgaged my jewelry and used the money to pay salaries. Once the team was set, I was confident of our journey being positive even if it would have a few hurdles in between. I am very happy to share that we now have an outstanding team, 60% of which are women.

Failures are the best teachers so how did you overcome that?

I strongly believe that a failure only happens if you conclude it as a failure. If you are persistent, innovative, and agile you can always convert a failure into an opportunity. In my own case, because I knew that a fund shortage is only a temporary setback if you allow yourself room to innovate and grow, I persisted and invested my own personal savings to grow. You don’t fail if you persist and are quick enough to make changes to the way you do things.

Your opinion on the current situation of OTT platforms or the scope for young writers

OTT platforms provide lucrative prospects to budding content creators. Demand for OTT content based on geo-demographics is on the rise, both within India and internationally. I think the year 2022 is definitely going to be an exciting year for OTT players as the content pipeline will be stronger than ever.

Share 3 advice for young entrepreneurs and storytellers

  1. Persevere and don’t stop!
  2. Team is everything. Running a start-up is not a one man show!
  3. Money, name and success are all transient. The only one that prevails is the relationship with humans. So be grounded, humble and empathetic in life.

Salons or Beauty Parlours traditionally have been run by Women. It is only in the recent times that large chains like Lakme Salon and Enrich have entered into the market.  The Beauty industry is growing at a rate of 28% per annum and is estimated at 1.89lakh crore by 2025. We women are more inclined towards beauty. And the Salon business seems to be the easiest and safest business to be in.

But here the main point is to treat it like a business. So, what are the things one should focus on?

Just because you have done the required beauty certification does not allow you to start a business. Getting started with something new is the hardest thing, but with the right preparation and planning, we can do it easily.

Do the followings:

  1. Before doing anything sit down and think why you want to start your business. Who is your target audience and what problem are you going to solve for you client?
  2. Have a robust business plan for your salon. With the help of a business plan, you can create a roadmap and understand how you will move further with it. Include important factors while creating your salon business plan: your available funds, monthly charges for rent and other expenses, products to use, target customers, and how to reach them.
  3. The next part is your location. Don’t start it in your house because it is convenient. Find location where people will be able to see your Salon, like in a market place or anywhere there is good foot fall. It should also have a good parking arrangement as well.
  1. If you are going to run the Salon alone then you will be stuck. So, I suggest you have at least one assistant who will run the Salon when you are unable to attend.
  2. One of the most important features of having a profitable business is that you need a constant supply of new clients. You must look at marketing as a expense but an investment in your business. You must have a good marketing plan and good plan to retain your clients because at any given point of time 20% of your clients leave you.
  3. Always have an exit plan. How much money do you want to retire with? It is a must because if that is in place we know the road we are taking and follow the path.

The modern salon industry offers considerable opportunity to generate real wealth for Women and Investors. The idea is to develop your business on the talents of your team and not depend on one person.

A premium quality natural baby bath and skincare brand, it uses ingredients that have been used generations ago by our grandmothers and CITTA successfully combines the age-old traditions backed by Science. CITTA’s roots lie in the research undertaken to understand the customs, rituals, and practices followed across the country which are then processed by testing and development into the products that they proudly call ‘Grandma Approved’. Let’s hear from Akanksha about her journey with CITTA

How and why we started CITTA:

I was studying in the US when I heard the news about the ongoing case of a certain baby care company. It really disturbed me, babies are the most innocent beings and it’s our job to protect them so anything we apply on them needs to be 100% safe. Growing up in a large family of 10, I had the opportunity to receive the love and knowledge of my Dadi as well as Nani and all their nuskhas. I wanted to share it with every precious little child. When I came back from the US, with the help of my mother, who studied cosmetic technology, decided to create CITTA, a natural and safe option for parents where tradition is backed by modern science.

Our principle is very simple – babies deserve the best, so every ingredient applied on their body must be safe and should benefit them. CITTA is derived from the Sanskrit word  चित्त which means consciousness; we are conscious of what and how we create. We made a vow early on to ensure that every parent is aware and conscious of what they are  applying on their little one hence every single ingredient we use, even those below 1% are listed for every parent to see and understand, as honesty for us is the very best policy.

Struggles we faced:

We launched CITTA in 2021 during hardcore Covid times. Initially during launch there was a struggle as everything was going haywire due to Covid. There was less manpower and we faced multiple delays and pushed timelines. Manufacturing and production also took a hit because sourcing at that time was difficult. However, we were clear from the start we will use only the highest quality ingredients and that comprising the quality wasn’t an option. So the start was difficult but slowly things started getting better and we were successfully able to source the ingredients, production began and we were able to create a product we are very confident in.

Future Plan:

We hope to make CITTA a household brand in India because we believe that every child deserves the best and it’s our duty to provide it as our products are safe and natural, inspired from Dadi Nani ke Nuskhe and backed by science. Once we are successful in making CITTA a household name in India, then we plan to export in future too as we want to reach out to most of the children across the world with our products. We feel that our products are of international quality and would be appreciated by the people there too.

Balance Personal & work:

I started working at a younger age, so I’m still learning how to balance my work and personal life, but something I’m coming to understand is that listening to my intuition helps me stay happier and peaceful. And a peaceful mind leads to a happier and more successful day!

A leading D2C clothing brand shares the fact that 3 crore babies are born each year; each using 5000 diapers in their lifetime, the number of diapers landing in landfills was disturbingly huge! This was a huge motivation for her to find a solution, and create a sustainable clothing diaper brand.

A rash on her son’s skin seeded the thought of SuperBottoms in Pallavi’s mind. Necessity is indeed the mother of invention! In her quest for a better alternative for her son, she talked to other mothers and found that diaper issues were a common problem for them as well. Thus began the search for better alternatives, like traditional cloth nappies, but it presented the challenge of all day usage. She got a few Advanced Cloth Diapers from the US, which are popular there; but they did not fit very well on Indian babies.

The fact that 3 crore babies are born each year; each using 5000 diapers in their lifetime, the number of diapers landing in landfills was disturbingly huge! This was a huge motivation for her to find a solution. She saw a definite need for a product that would give the convenience of diapers while not harming the environment and baby’s skin.

She quit her corporate job and followed her dream to make cloth diapers which were suitable for Indian babies and have Indian prints which were quirky and cute! This is how SuperBottoms was started – a unique brand with an all mothers team who have been ardent customers of the brand and now turned brand ambassadors.

Like any other entrepreneurial journey, this one too has had its own ups and downs. One of them being copycats coming up with their own cloth diapers, but with continuous innovation, patent protected products, SuperBottoms has been able to overcome this problem. The lockdown had a big impact on the supply chain and posed multiple problems, which were dealt with by diversifying the product line, getting own warehouse in Bengaluru, and multiple suppliers.

People are becoming conscious about the environment, they are opting for sustainable choices. The increasing number of sustainable brands is a testament to that shift in the consumer’s mindset. Our cloth diapers not only make for a great skin-friendly, pocket-friendly choice but also a sustainable one. It’s a win-win for the consumer!
